I've lost my phone before and have had a few scares. It's not fun. That sinking feeling when you pat your pocket and it's empty—we've all felt it.
One time I was going diving in Key Largo and was ready to board a departing vessel when I realized I didn't have my phone. I was so worried that my time on the boat would be spent thinking about what happened to it that I decided to take a chance and quickly check the rental car.
I found it. But that moment made me even more determined not to leave it to chance the next time something goes missing.
Later in life, my mother left her phone at the hairdresser's. Luckily, I had put my phone number on the back of her phone, and I got a call—we got the phone back.
But something bothered me: I didn't like leaving personal information exposed on her phone for anyone to see. In an age of identity theft, that felt like trading one problem for another.
Then it occurred to me: a QR code that linked to emergency contacts would do the trick. No personal information exposed. No apps required. Just a simple scan that connects the finder to the owner.
And I thought—this could benefit just about everyone. Young and old. College students with laptops. Travelers with luggage. Families with tablets. Business professionals with expensive equipment. You name it.
Products like Find My iPhone and AirTags are great—but they're not foolproof. If your device is powered off, in airplane mode, or out of range, those solutions can't help you.
